Lugo is one of the regions of Galicia, in the north-west of Spain. Situated above Portugal, Galicia is often referred to as the land of a thousand rivers and Brits compare it the the Lake District in the north-west area of England, as well as to Cornwall in the south west of England.
This region is unspoiled by tourists and is a perfect escape from the ‘busyness’ of life as it is today for so many of us. While it has real seasons (unlike the south of Spain, which can be hot all year round and intolerably hot in the summer months), our little valley has a micro-climate, which ensures that we have never yet had snow in winter but do have amazing, and tolerable, heat, from late April until the end of November. Temperatures can reach 36 degrees C (96.8 degrees F), though this is usually in August, the months of June, July and September usually sporting 30 degrees C (86 degrees F) as a norm).
Our garden contains 600 square metres of land, of which almost all is gravelled, making it low maintenance for anyone who wants to use this beautiful home as simply a holiday retreat. Our little kitchen garden makes for about 30 square metres of ungravelled land, for growing tomatoes and potatoes. There are also three vines which, in September can supply you with black grapes, if they have been tended correctly. Nevertheless, their growth produces beautiful shade over the pergola next to the kitchen door, where the brick barbecue can make for satisfying get-togethers in those hot months.
The garden also houses a two-tier fish pond. Fish have found the conditions perfect for breeding and a motor allows for the circulation of water during the hotter months, keeping the water free from the build-up of any algae.
A beautiful shed (6′ x 5′ ‘ / 8 mtrs. x 1.6 mtrs.) can be used for what you want it to be – an office (it is fitted with electricity) a children’s play area, a bar, or simply storage of sunbeds etc..
There is also an open-fronted garage in the garden, which is big enough for one vehicle and plenty of odds and ends. Situated in the garage is also a small sectioned-off portion, for the storage of wood, should you wish to enjoy the wood-burning stove in the living room in the colder months of the year.
Enough about the garden! Let’s now move inside, eh?
Each room has a separate page dedicated to it, so enjoy what you see, and hopefully feel, from the words and photos.
